An Expanding Nation

History Alive - 'In this unit, you will learn about the growth of the United States from about 1800 to the early 1850's. In 1800, the U.S. was bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Mississippi to the west. Farther west lay regions claimed by Great Britain, Russia, France and Spain. By the 1850's, the United States had acquired these lands, more than doubling it's size.' While these new territories provided new financial opportunities for many Americans, their acquisition did not come without conflict, tragedy, and abuse.

During the 1820s and 1830s, democracy began expanding in the US during what became known as the ' era of the common man ' because common men could now become involved in politics and democracy in ways they had never been able to before. Democracy expanded in the following ways: Election of 1824. Georgia declares tribes are “domestic dependent nations” 1832 - Worcester v. Georgia rules the federal government, and not the states, has jurisdiction over Indian territories. 1838 - Trail of Tears begins when President Martin Van Buren orders the army to remove remaining tribal members to Indian Territory. Regional School Unit 4 (RSU #4) is a school district headquartered in Wales, Maine.[1] It serves Wales, Litchfield, and Sabattus.[2]

In March 2014 the district considered privatizing its school bus services.[2] Voters previously rejected the proposal in 2012 in a nonbinding referendum.[3]
